Most of us would agree that life balance is necessary and quite often missing in our lives. With the responsibilities to our families, jobs and churches, we often find there isn’t enough time to get everything done. So if we are always playing catch up, how can we hope to find time for balance?
First, let’s define life balance. According to Wikipedia, life balance is a comfortable state of equilibrium, proper prioritization or the ability to effectively split our time and energy between the different areas of our lives.
Each part of our lives requires attention, but they are not all created equal. For example, our friends are important to us but not compared to our spouse or children. Our church activities and obligations are voluntary, while our jobs usually are not, so they have to be treated accordingly. It makes sense to take time for self-discovery to learn what our priorities are, so we give them the proper amount of our time and energy.
So HOW do we create this elusive life balance? Let’s focus on time management.
➢ Schedule everything that is important;
This includes time for proper self-care (nutrition, exercise and rest) so we have the energy for the rest of our schedule.
➢ Create action lists;
These can keep us on task for the items that should happen each day. Some things can be rescheduled if the day gets away from us. If it is important, put it on the list!
➢ Utilize available resources and tools;
GetEyejot.com (video email for follow up)
Doodle.com (schedule meetings with multiple people in one place)
Evernote.com (get organized),
This can free up valuable time that could be better spent on other priorities.
Find the one that work best and use it.
➢ Learn to say NO to some things;
Saying no allows you to say yes to more important ones
➢ Add daily activities that bring a sense of well-being and fulfillment.
For those that struggle with this, it is prudent to find someone to offer more guidance. While they do not have all the answers, there are those that specialize in this very topic!
Remember, we are often quick to offer grace to others but slow to give ourselves that same grace and mercy. We are daughters of the most-high God living in grace.
Life balance is not something we FIND but merely a way to live life. We are each uniquely and wonderfully made, ensuring that life balance will look different for each of us.
