Okay, well I’m not afraid of the dark… most of the time! Darkness represents different things at various stages of our lives. Prior to being introduced to Jesus, the darkness is spiritual deadness. When we meet Him and encounter His grace, He brings us from darkness into His glorious light! (I Peter 2:9)
When our spirit is alive in Christ, there are still dark places to navigate. The most obvious is living a sinful lifestyle… having a form of godliness but denying its power (II Tim. 3:5). Repentance and renewal provide the Light needed to dispel this darkness.
However, even when we are walking in truth and integrity, we will encounter dark patches. Your darkness may be different than mine… but most darkness results from some type of pain or doubt such as rejection, sickness, or need. One of my dark seasons reared its head in the form of fear… fear of pain and fear of the future. Oh, how easily the darkness begins to descend when our focus centers on these things. Before long, I wanted to crawl into bed and hide my head under the covers!
For me, overcoming the darkness was and is a daily venture. It is purposefully turning my heart and mind from fear to faith. Fear demands that I control my circumstances and those around me. Faith demands that I have confidence in my Heavenly Father to take care of my circumstances and me. I must daily choose to declare that no matter how off-kilter my circumstances are, He has a plan for me… and it’s a good one (Jeremiah 29:11)! Only when I allow this truth to sink into my spirit will the light of joy rise from within! I can trust Him!! He is in charge! He fights for me! What an awesome Dad!
Psalm 112 speaks of those who have a reverent awe of the Lord. Here are just a few of their characteristics:
The righteous will not be shaken!
The righteous will have no fear of bad news!
The righteous are steadfast, trusting in the Lord!
The righteous heart is secure and without fear!
The righteous will look on their enemy in triumph!
Bad news will come; pain is sure to impact our lives; reality sometimes beats us down… BUT, when we stand on the Lord’s promises, we will not live in fear and we will not be shaken!
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD,
whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV)
Yes, my heart is steadfast. Watch out, darkness! The light of faith, truth, and the Holy Spirit is shining thru and growing in me! I’m not afraid of the dark. My Dad will bring His good plans to fruition in my life as I trust Him and stand in faith! Thank you, Father! Let Your light come and dispel every ounce of darkness as I walk in Your truth and love!
